Many believe white space will unleash economic opportunity worth billions to small start-up corporations free of charge to use the unlicensed spectrum.

The Federal Communications Commission has been formulating white space policy for some time. An announcement on the agency’s future plans is expected Sept. 23. A NY Times article about Wi-Fi on anabolic steroids said that white space became available when the conversion from analog to electronic digital broadcast created a greater unused portion of the television broadcast range. Digital TV is more tightly focused on the broadcast spectrum, which leaves more white space between licensed frequencies. The potential of Wi-Fi is greatly enhanced by white space because by using the lower-frequency waves of the TV spectrum, systems will cover broader areas, pass through walls and buildings better and rarely drop connections . Super Wi-Fi have their doubters

Powerful mobile systems with a broad reach can tread on their frequencies, they believe. Microsoft’s white space system
Wi-Fi on steroids using the white-space spectrum is being tested in various locations. As reported in the Register, Microsoft is taking advantage of the white space spectrum on its corporate campus near Seattle. Transmitting from just a pair of locations, the “white-fi” network, as Microsoft calls it, connects users on shuttle buses and in buildings anywhere on its 500-acre campus. The Times article mentions a trial white space network in New Hanover County, N.C.. The transportation department uses white space to connect with remote cameras that monitor traffic congestion. Without the expense of sending workers into the field, the parks department meets federal requirements by collecting and transmitting environmental details . Other breakthroughs to expect in the future might be remote medical systems, more efficient power distribution and new industries valued within the billions.
